Ron Coleman Memorial HorseRace
Event Becomes Memorial for McCook Golf Coach
Ron Coleman, the late, legendary golf coach at McCook
High School is remembered with a popular golf event.“As of 2008, the golf shootout – which takes place
during the John Mullen Pro-Am Golf Tournament officially
became known as the Ron Coleman Memorial HorseRace,”
said Ron Friehe, one of the organizers for the memorial
event, “This is our way of remembering Ron for all he
did for the golf course, the community and the young
people he served as a coach, teacher and mentor. He was
a special man who left a wonderful legacy.”
The Ron Coleman Memorial HorseRace is supported by Coach
Coleman’s many friends. During his quarter of a century
in McCook, Coleman became a friend of golfers, athletes
and the youth he served while coaching and teaching
physical education classes at McCook Public Schools.
“Our long-term goal for both the HorseRace and the
tournament, is to grow the memorial fund to increase the
purse, which in turn helps raise funds for Community
Hospital”, Friehe said. “Ron Coleman did a lot for the
golf course and the youth of this community. We feel
this is a good way to honor his memory.”
